Chapter 43 Summary

Belly convinces herself that everything is normal as their friends arrive at Cousins for the wedding. Belly sits out by the pool with Anika and Taylor. Anika points out that Belly never shared how “hot Conrad is” (216), and Taylor points out that Conrad “was always [Belly’s] man” (216). Belly states firmly that he is not anymore.

At dinner, Belly avoids looking at Conrad, glancing around at everyone else at the table but him. She prickles with jealousy when she notices him say something that makes Anika laugh. Jeremiah gives a toast, thanking everyone for attending the wedding. He urges Belly to say something, and she thanks everyone for coming and Conrad for making the meal.

Belly goes to Jeremiah’s room after dinner as he gets ready for his night out. Belly recalls a memory of a dog he found on the beach when they were kids that he called Rosie, even after discovering the dog was male. Jeremiah frowns, telling Belly that Conrad, not him, found the dog. Belly is surprised to learn that her memory is wrong and wonders what other memories of hers might be incorrect.
